A superb, and quite rare, copper-engraved map of Italy including Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily and the Adriatic. The full title is'A Mapp of Italy Whose chief Estates and Isles are the Dukedome of Toscania, The Republic of Venice, the Estates of the Church, The Kingdom of Naples, The Isles of Sicile, Sardaigne, Corsica etc.
In which said parts are included severall other Estates and Provinces of less note'. It was engraved by Wenceslaus Hollar and published in London, by Richard Blome in 1669.
This map is of particular note because it is the earliest folio-sized map of Italy to be engraved in England. It is dedicated to William Whitmore of Apley. The map is printed on hand-laid, watermarked paper and. Measures approximately 400mm x 303mm with margins beyond and is blank verso. It is decorated with numerous sailing ships (including a naval battle off the west coast of Sicily) and it includes a very decorative title cartouche, dedication cartouche and a compass rose.Condition report: Excellent overall condition. Good strong impression, attractive outline hand-colouring.
Occasional faint creasing, strengthening to the lower margin either side of the centrefold. Approximately 1cm closed tear to the right margin, repaired verso. Very slight smudging of the lower red border drawn outside the neatline at the bottom of the sheet and of the underlining in the title cartouche. Miniscule nick to the bottom right corner of the sheet.
