A large and impressively detailed county map of Staffordshire by Emanuel Bowen published in London in c. The map was originally published in the'Large English Atlas which was a collaboration between Kitchin and Emanuel Bowen, and which was arguably the finest English atlas produced in the whole of the 18th century.
This example was published by Carington Bowles, John Bowles and Robert Sayer. The hand-coloured map features a very decorative title cartouche and a dedication by Kitchin to Earl John Gower. The text surrounding the map gives information on the county nobility and on the main towns.The printed area measures approximately 525mm x 690mm with margins beyond, blank verso. Condition report: Very good condition overall; printed on good quality, strong, hand laid paper, centrefold as published. Short splits at each side of the centrefold (entering the printed border on the left side and confined to the margin on the right side - both repaired with tape verso); small biro mark to the right of the dedication cartouche; several small marginal closed tears not affecting the printed area and repaired with tape verso; occasional minor nicks to the extreme edges of the sheet not affecting the printed area; two very small holes to the bottom margin, well outside the printed area. Light age toning, heavier toning verso.
