This is a very rare copper engraved, hand colored map of Naples from the year 1572. It is not a reproduction. A systematically composed, comprehensive and highly detailed Map of Naples by Georg Braun and Franz Hogenberg from Civitas Orbus Terrarum Vol.
I, published in Cologne in 1572. This great atlas provided clients with a birds-eye views and maps of cities from all over the known world. The map itself measures approximately 19 x 13-1/2.Matted and framed it measures about 21 x 26-1/4. The frame & matting is around thirty or forty years old. Provenance I acquired this map about four years ago from a decorators shop in Middleburg, Virginia. The said proprietor had indicated to me that she had known the gentleman (deceased) from whence it came to her among some other antiques.
CONDITION This antique map is original. It's in good condition or even better. The map is entirely visible within the opening of the linen matting. It is intact including all of its edges.
I have never seen this map out of the frame & matting. It appears to be backed by a black color linen or paper stock? The wooden frame has some minor scratches on it.The linen mat is in good condition. The frame and matting show modest wear, which naturally occurred as a result of aging.
