Size: The printed area measures approximately 510mm x 382mm with small margins beyond; blank verso. Description: A very decorative and attractive original, antique, copper-plate engraved county map of Monmouthshire by John Speed. It includes an inset town plan of Monmouth and is embellished with several decorative cartouches containing the title, distance scale and publishers imprint. It was originally published in an early edition of Speed's seminal work'The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine'. Cartographer / Engraver: John Speed. Provenance:'The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine', London 1612-27 (Sudbury and Humble edition). Condition: Very good overall condition. Printed on thick, high quality hand-laid paper. Light age toning and one or two minor age spots. Old split to the top and bottom of the centrefold, repaired verso (minor loss to the margin at the bottom of the centrefold which has been repaired). Minor crease to the right of the centrefold. Two small pieces of mounting tape verso at the top and bottom of the centrefold, where the map was previously mounted and framed for display purposes. Please study all the photographs carefully to fully appreciate the condition.
