Original 1788 copperplate engraved antique map of the eastern United States, printed more than 230 years ago. The coverage area extends from Maine to the St. Johns River in present-day Florida, west to the Appalachian Mountains and Lake Huron.
The map was drawn shortly after the Treaty of Paris, which marked the end of the Revolutionary War and recognized American independence. It locates forts, Indian tribes, cities, towns, bays, rivers, capes, and mountains. Among the named places and features are Fort Duquesne, the Iroguois Nation, Philadelphia, Long Island, Annapolis, the Hudson River, Savannah, Fort Hamilton, Albany, Cape May, and New Jersey.A few locations have unusual spellings: Machasuzet Bay, Conecticut, and Pensylvanie. There are seven distance scales in the lower corner, and longitude is measured from Paris and Ferro. The image area measures 36 x 25 cm [14¼" x 9¾"]. The map is titled Les États Unis de L'Amerique Septentrionale, Partie Orientale. It was drawn by Rigobert Bonne, Ingénieur-Hydrographe de la Marine, and engraved by Gaspard André. The map was published in Nicolas Desmarest and Rigobert Bonne's Atlas Ecyclopédique, Paris, 1788 and is identified as Plate 117. It is in very good condition, with a bold impression and no rips or tears. There's a small spot in the upper corner, near Fort Western (Augusta, Maine).
