Original 1780 copperplate engraved antique map of the eastern United States between Virginia and Florida printed more than 230 years ago. The coverage area extends along the coast from the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay to the St. Johns River, west to the Appalachian Mountains, including North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. The map locates Williamsburg, Port Royal, Cape Fear, Savannah, Edenton, Augusta, Brunswick, Orangeburg, Cape Hatteras, the St. Marys River, Wilmington, the Roanoke River, Brunswick, and Charleston (spelled Charlestown on the map).It also lcoates numerous forts and labels the lands of two Native American peoples: the Cherokees and the Creeks. There are four distance scales in the upper corner, and longitude is measured from Paris and Ferro. The image area measures 22 x 23 cm [8¾" x 13"]. The map is titled Carte de la Partie Sud des Etats Unis de L'Amerique Septentrionale.
It was drawn by Rigobert Bonne, Ingénieur-Hydrographe de la Marine. The map was published in Guillaume Thomas François Raynal's Atlas de toutes les parties connues du globe terrestre... Geneva, 1780 and is identified as Plate 48.It is in excellent condition, with a bold impression and no rips or tears. The map has a vertical fold, as issued, and is uncolored.
