Original 1780 copperplate engraved antique map of the southeastern United States, printed more than 230 years ago. The coverage area extends from southern Illinois to the Florida Keys and the Gulf Coast to west of the Mississippi Delta. The map locates numerous Indian tribes and villages, as well as forts, cities, towns, bays, rivers, capes, and mountains. An inset of part of the upper Missouri locates the abandoned Fort d'Orleans.Other named places and features include Charleston, Savannah, New Orleans, Natchez, St. Augustine, Cape Canaveral, the Ohio River, the Appalachian Mountains, Pensacola, and Biloxi. There are six distance scales in the lower corner, and longitude is measured from Paris and Ferro. The image area measures 32.2 x 21.3 cm [12¾" x 8½"]. The map is titled Carte de la Louisiane, et de la Floride.
It was drawn by Rigobert Bonne, Ingénieur-Hydrographe de la Marine. The map was published in Guillaume Thomas François Raynal's Atlas de toutes les parties connues du globe terrestre... Geneva, 1780 and is identified as Plate 46.It is in excellent condition, with a bold impression and no rips or tears. The map has a horizontal fold, as issued, and is uncolored. It is printed on a sturdy laid paper.
