A scarce early map of Cuba and Jamaica, with the Cayman Islands and the western part of Hispaniola, published by Cornelis Wytfliet in Descriptionis Ptolemaicae Augmentum, Louvain, 1597. Details on the island of Cuba include Havana, Matanzas, Puerto Principis (Nuevitas), and Baracoa. The place names on Jamaica are all in Spanish, including Pa del Negrillo (today's Negril). An elaborate title cartouche at the lower left includes a ram's head, putti, female busts, and vines with fruits. Topography is drawn in relief, and the seas are dramatically rendered with a wavy, moiré pattern.
The map is titled Cuba Insula et Jamaica, and the image area measures 23 x 29.2 cm [9" x 11½"] on a larger sheet, with generous margins on all sides. Very good condition, bright and clean, with a bold, strong impression and no marks, rips, or tears. There is a vertical center fold, as issued, and the map is blank on the back, with no printing on the reverse side. Please see the scans and feel free to ask any questions.
