A Framed Map of Northumberland by John Speed 1676. A copper engraved map of the county of Northumberland from John Speed's famous'The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britain', with inset town plan of Newcastle & Berwick, elaborate cartouche, compass rose and the arms of England. Published in 1676 by Basset & Chiswell. A good impression, some slight losses at centre fold. Verso, an old repair to centre fold full length, with a mis-alignment of 0.5mm to 1mm{see photos}.

Plate 390mm x 510mm wide, sheet 20mm all round, framed and double glazed. In a good frame measuring 450mm x 570mm wide, and with a legend plaque{which shows the wrong date}. I have not de-framed this map. My back-lit photo shows the distinctive'shadow' around the chain {vertical} lines, found only on pre-1750'antique laid' paper, made with a single-faced laid & chain mould.

The county maps it contained were derived from the most up to date sources then available and drew heavily on the work of Saxton and Norden, but Speed added his own innovations including the addition of town plans and vignettes, county boundaries and coats of arms. Europe free {de-framed only} World free {de-framed only}. Here are some of my map sales feedbacks.
