Bears a label for Baynton Williams on the reverse, one of London's oldest and most respected map dealers. Bishop Gibson described the maps from this series as "much the fairest and most correct of any that have yet appeared". The maps are also notable for using up to three different mileage scales. This particular map comes from the later edition of 1722, as the first edition of 1695 contained a number of errors which have een corrected on this example. Robert Morden died in 1703.
These maps are the first county maps to show roads (based on Ogilby's road maps) and show three scales representing great, middle and small miles as different scales were used in different parts of the country. Morden was employed to replace the outdated maps by Saxton, engraved by Kip and Hole. One innovation was the showing of longitudes measured from the meridian of St. Paul's Cathedral given in the form of time in minutes at the top of the map in Roman numerals and at the bottom in degrees. It is framed, mounted and glazed, and is ready to hang.
It would make an eyecatching decorative embellishment to any room and would also make a beautiful gift for anyone with an interest in antique maps and charts. Sheet size = 53 x 47 cm. Plate size = 42 x 35 cm.
